Pillar = broad topic, 2,000–6,000 words, links to all clusters Cluster = specific subtopic, 1,500–3,000 words, links back to pillar
Step 1: Choose pillar topics
One pillar per core business expertise area. For ArjanKC.com.np:
| Pillar | Head keyword | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing Metrics | marketing metrics glossary | ✅ Live |
| SEO in Nepal | SEO Nepal | ✅ Existing |
| Google Ads | google ads guide | ✅ Glossary live |
| Paid Ads Nepal | PPC Nepal | ✅ Existing |
| E-commerce Nepal | e-commerce in Nepal | ✅ Existing |
| Automation & AI | marketing automation | 🔄 In progress |
Step 2: Map cluster pages
For each pillar, list 10–30 cluster topics before writing anything.
Example: Marketing Metrics pillar
| Cluster | Primary keyword | Intent | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculators Hub | roas calculator | Tool | ✅ |
| ROAS Guide | what is roas | Informational | ✅ |
| Google Ads Glossary | google ads glossary | Reference | ✅ |
| GA4 Reference | ga4 metrics | Reference | ✅ |
| Acronyms A–Z | marketing acronyms | Reference | ✅ |
| CAC Guide | cac calculator | Tool | ✅ |
| MER Explained | mer marketing | Informational | 📋 Planned |
Step 3: Plan intent and avoid cannibalization
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| One primary keyword per page | “ROAS calculator” ≠ “ROAS guide” (different pages) |
| Pillar = broad; cluster = specific | Pillar: “marketing metrics” / Cluster: “CPM formula” |
| Same intent = one page only | Don’t create two “what is CPA” pages |
| Check SERP before writing | If Google shows product pages, don’t write a guide |
Step 4: Internal linking rules
Pillar page links
- Link to every cluster page in a “Related guides” section
- Use descriptive anchor text (“ROAS Calculator”, not “click here”)
- Group links by subtopic category
Cluster page links
- Link to pillar in first 200 words and conclusion
- Link to 2–3 sibling clusters where contextually relevant
- Link to dictionary terms for definitions
Site-wide links
- Service pages link to relevant pillar
- Dictionary entries link to parent cluster/pillar
- Course notes link to public guides where applicable
Step 5: Publishing sequence
Week 1: Publish pillar page
Week 2: Cluster 1 + Cluster 2 (highest priority)
Week 3: Cluster 3 + Cluster 4
Week 4: Dictionary entries for key terms in cluster
Week 5+: One cluster or dictionary entry per week
Month 3: Refresh pillar with new cluster links + updated data
Never publish 20 clusters simultaneously — each new page should link to existing ones that are already live.
Content types within a cluster
| Type | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pillar | Broad authority | Marketing Metrics Hub |
| Guide | How-to | Consent Mode v2 Setup |
| Reference/Glossary | Definitions | Google Ads Glossary |
| Tool/Calculator | Engagement + links | ROAS Calculator |
| Comparison | Commercial intent | Google vs Meta Ads |
| Checklist | Downloadable utility | Technical SEO Audit |
| Case study | E-E-A-T proof | Gurkha Technology SEO case study |
| FAQ page | Long-tail capture | Embedded in all types |

Measuring cluster performance
| Metric | Tool | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Pillar organic traffic | GA4 | Month-over-month growth |
| Cluster rankings | Search Console | Top 10 for target keywords |
| Internal link clicks | GA4 events | Clusters receiving traffic from pillar |
| AI citations | Manual spot-check | Perplexity/ChatGPT cite pillar |

AI citation optimization for clusters
Structure every cluster page for extraction:
- Definition in first 100 words
- Data table where applicable
- Numbered steps for how-to content
- FAQ schema (FAQPage JSON-LD)
- Consistent entity naming (same term = same definition site-wide)
