SmartLink Nepal Pvt. Ltd., a rapidly growing logistics and retail support company, was facing intense competition from both local and international firms. The organization experienced delays in order processing, poor coordination among departments, and difficulties in responding quickly to customer demands. To improve efficiency and achieve competitive advantage, the management decided to redesign its business processes and adopt strategic information systems. The company conducted a detailed analysis of its operational workflow and identified several areas requiring business process improvement and business process reengineering. By automating inventory management, customer relationship management, and supplier communication, the organization aimed to reduce operational costs and improve customer satisfaction.
To support strategic decision-making, SmartLink Nepal implemented a modern database management system and established a centralized data warehouse. The company collected large volumes of data from sales transactions, customer feedback, delivery records, and supplier databases. Managers used data marts and business intelligence tools to analyze customer purchasing behavior and forecast market demand. In addition, the organization introduced knowledge management practices that allowed employees to share reports, operational experiences, and best practices through an internal information portal. These systems helped managers make faster and more accurate decisions while improving organizational learning and knowledge sharing.
As customer expectations shifted toward digital and mobile services, SmartLink Nepal invested heavily in wireless technologies and mobile computing solutions. Delivery personnel used mobile devices connected through wireless networks to update delivery status in real time, while customers could track their orders using a mobile commerce application. The company also integrated Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into its warehouse operations, where smart sensors monitored inventory movement and storage conditions automatically. These technologies improved operational efficiency, reduced delivery delays, and strengthened communication between employees, suppliers, and customers.
After two years of implementing strategic information systems and mobile technologies, SmartLink Nepal achieved significant business growth and operational excellence. The company successfully reduced operational inefficiencies, improved customer service quality, and gained a competitive advantage in the market. However, the organization also faced challenges such as data security concerns, employee resistance to organizational change, and the high cost of maintaining advanced IT infrastructure. Despite these challenges, the case demonstrates how organizations can use information systems, data management, wireless technologies, and business process redesign to respond effectively to business pressures and achieve long-term success in a competitive business environment.
Questions:
a. Explain how SmartLink Nepal Pvt. Ltd. used business process improvement, data management, and strategic information systems to achieve competitive advantage.
b. As an information system manager of SmartLink Nepal, how will you handle the challenge of employee resistance to organizational change and motivate them to adopt the latest technology.
