Daraz Nepal, founded in 2014 and acquired by Alibaba Group in 2018, is Nepal’s largest e-commerce platform, transforming online shopping. It offers a wide product range, secure digital payments, and nationwide delivery. Operating on a marketplace model, Daraz generates revenue through seller commissions, advertisements, and logistics services. Continuous improvements to its website and mobile app provide a seamless shopping experience with easy navigation, secure payments, and order tracking.
Customer acquisition and retention are driven by data and digital marketing. Advanced analytics track browsing behavior, purchase history, and seasonal trends to deliver personalized recommendations. Aggressive social media campaigns, influencer collaborations, and seasonal events such as the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival and Dashain-Tihar sales attract new customers. Loyalty programs, gamification, reward points, and personalized discounts encourage repeat purchases and long-term engagement.
Daraz competes with active Nepalese e-commerce platforms like SajiloBuy and HamroBazar. While SajiloBuy emphasizes low prices, local seller partnerships, and limited delivery, and HamroBazar offers a diverse product range but faces delivery and digital presence challenges, Daraz stands out with high product variety including international brands, competitive pricing, strong digital presence, efficient logistics, and 24/7 customer support. Challenges like rural delivery, cash-on-delivery dependence, and counterfeit risks are managed through logistics expansion, digital wallet promotion, strict seller verification, and customer education, solidifying Daraz’s market leadership and enabling further growth.
Questions:
a. Examine the ways Daraz Nepal’s marketplace model and digital platform contribute to revenue generation and enhance customer experience.
b. How does Daraz use marketing and loyalty programs to attract and retain customers?
c. What are the challenges faced by Daraz and how can they be mitigated?
d. Identify the technology advancements Daraz must adopt to sustain competitive advantage.
